It’s been a while since we were last here together. A lot has changed in my life since the previous post. I’m pleased to share that I’ve officially upgraded to a PhD candidate. This milestone means a lot to me—not just academically, but personally. I had felt it as a barrier in my journey for quite some time. Honestly, I could have passed on my first attempt, but I could not. I believe it was due to some inner limitations I’m still working to overcome.
Anyway, what was our motto? "Give yourself time, and watch yourself grow." Maybe that’s not exactly how it goes, but the idea is what matters. 🙂 You can write my name underneath it. 😉
On social media, I often see people sharing only their successes. While it’s natural to celebrate achievements, this can sometimes be discouraging, especially for younger students. It can create the illusion that others are progressing effortlessly, as if they’ve never experienced failure.
That’s why I choose to share both the highs and the lows. My academic environment is full of students in higher education, and we’re constantly exposed to the seemingly perfect success stories of so-called “superhumans.” But here’s the truth: you don’t learn anything meaningful from people who only talk about success. Every cornerstone is built on failed attempts, and every attempt helps you grow. It’s the failures you learn from that shape your dedication. That’s what truly defines brilliant people.
So, value people who are worth listening to.
With warm regards,
Mutluhan Yılmaz
P.S. I also earned my UK driving licence—on the second attempt. 🙂
