Everyone knows about the relationship between Elves and Dwarves. Indeed, I am not sure whether it is based more on friendship or hatred. I don't think even they know the nature of their relationship. 🙂
For a long time, I am remembering the moment when Gimli told Galadriel, the Queen of the Elves, that he wanted to look at her one last time.
It is such a touching moment.
In the movie, this scene is not simply about wanting to look at a beautiful face one last time. I think it is also about remembering the beauty of the world in difficult times, and drawing strength from the very beauty and goodness that people (characters) are fighting to preserve.
When Galadriel asks, “What can a Dwarf want from an Elf?” and Gimli answers that he wants to look at her one more time, I feel that what he really means is:
“I want to remember what the world looks like in normal times, when it is still full of beautiful things.”
Maybe that is what makes this scene so touching for me.
And I wonder… if I were in that scene, what would I want from her?
I will write about that very soon.
